Catch a glimpse of what San Francisco once was, and what it is today. PHOTOS: We're "Under Construction," but we've placed about a dozen contemporary photo galleries online here, including the bridges, Lombard Street and even Golden Gate Park. MAPS to selected landmarks in the photo galleries are on this page. Click here to view Paul & Lesley Bailey-Gates' China and Hong Kong 2010 tour. VIDEO: Since we have an interest in street railways, the main video focus will be the San Francisco Municipal Railway, past and present (you can't miss it!). But other topics to be displayed won't have a rail in sight. For example, video clips of Amelia Earhart at SFO (coming), UC Berkeley's Carillon, and Laughing Sal* at Playland's Funhouse. Or how about August 15, 1945? The day Japan surrendered. Americans had endured years of hardship and rationing (gasoline, meat, etc.) during World War II. This silent clip shows the nearly spontaneous celebration that took place on San Francisco's Market Street. Other selected video clips are available here. |
*Laughing Sal (also called Laffing Sal) was an automaton built in the 1930's for display in funhouses and amusement parks across the US.
